The Works of Pete Seeger
Spook Handy graduated from college a Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in math and business. Upon graduation, he turned down several lucrative job offers in the actuarial field and bought his first guitar. Now, after 23 years in music, he has performed more than 3,000 concerts, written hundreds of songs, recorded four CDs and had many of his original compositions performed by more than a dozen other musicians. For his appearance at Hayner, Scoop will perform “The Works of Pete Seeger.” This original performance is a heartwarming, fun and educational program that looks at the legacy, struggles, songs and stories of one of America’s most beloved folk singers—the man who gave us “If I Had a Hammer,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy.” The program includes songs from the Almanac Singers (Pete, Woody Guthrie and others), the Weavers, the 1960s and the past few years. It traces the songs Pete has made famous, songs he wrote himself and songs he sings that have not become famous. It also includes a few of Spook’s own compositions—songs that Pete has sung or that have been influenced by Pete’s writing. Register at 1-800-613-3163.
