Ole friend,
Who sits so far above
With head so white and ne’er a feather move
The beauty and serenity
Yet fiercely to behold
A steady gleam from serious eyes
To watch and wait with grace
And power
I seem to feel this anxious bird
With passion and desire,
Admiring his ability
To live a glorious life.
O watch and watch and watch,
And then
He spreads his wings, amazingly so wide
And peers into the wild blue sky.
He moves and looks – then he is off
And finds the current of the wind.
He sets his wings with energy
And flows along the ancient bluffs
With eagle eyes he scans the mighty channel
To see a ripple, for his hungry tongue.
He soars and tips
And glides along, Oh faithful one, whom I admire.
All winter he will grace my mind
And when the time is right, he goes
Beyond my wildest dreams, I cannot follow
But when the snow again begins,
He will return
To feed and build his eager life
With others of his clan.
My winter now
Is quite fulfilled.
