Sarah Harnetiaux
Sarah held a sock hop for her tenth birthday, January 22, 2010, asking in lieu of gifts for donations to the Make a Wish Foundation in memory of her best friend’s little brother, who passed away two years ago of cancer. She raised $553 for the organization, of which $32 was part of her own money she received for Christmas. She also donated some of her own money to the Red Cross for the Haiti earthquake victims. Sarah is always generous with money she receives to help others. She also enjoys volunteering for her church.
Julia-May Campbell, Lydia Brandon, Emma Ernst
Julia-May, Lydia, and Emma heard about the earthquake and devastation in Haiti and decided they wanted to help. Their idea was to raise money through the school to assist the victims. They talked to one of the teachers, Mrs. Droste, and the principal, Mrs. Lutle, to see if it was all right. They then called the American Red Cross, whose representative came in a week later and talked to them and then the other students. Starting that Friday night at a school function and then at school for the next week, they conducted a change drive among the students that raised $800.
Nick Weigler
Nick organized a “Hearts for Huntington’s” fund-raiser at his school as a part of his personal goal to raise awareness of the disease his mom has. Through the fund-raiser, his class raised more than $400 (money is still coming in) to give to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. The money will help fund research to find a cure. Nick encouraged his whole class to participate in selling paper hearts and Blow Pops. He also inspired them to write letters to celebrities, including Oprah, Will Smith and President Obama, to help make Americans aware of the disease.
