City Directories

DirectoriesHow can you find what street your ancestors lived and worked on?
Can you trace where they moved to and when?

If they lived in town, find them in the city directory. Look for the head of household by name or a specific address. The name of the spouse of the head of household may also be given.
Some directories list where the head of household worked or the name of his/her business. Thus, you may be able to trace their working life through the years.

The Illinois Room in Hayner Downtown Library has city directories for Alton and Wood River. Find the street where your family lived!

He told his mother that he had bought an item for another boy in his group because the boy was the only kid in his group who hadn’t brought money with him to buy something from the gift shop. Will told his mother he just thought it was the right thing to do. Continue Reading
