The Friends of The Hayner Public Library District

The Friends of The Hayner Public Library District is a non profit membership group of volunteers dedicated to promoting The Hayner Public Library District throughout our community.  The volunteer members advocate, educate and raise funds on behalf of the library and its patrons.  Their primary source of fund raising is the Spring and Fall Book sale.  The Spring Sale is held the second weekend in May and the Fall Sale is on the second weekend of October.  Both sales start on Thursday evening as the preview evening.  For this day only, there is a nominal entry fee.  The sales continue on Friday, 9:00 am till 7:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.  There is no entry fee on Friday and Saturday. The sale takes place in the Friends building at 327 State Street in Alton.  Thousands of fiction and non fiction books of all genres (including large print books) are available for sale as well as music, records, videos, cds and magazines.  There is also an extensive collection of National Geographic magazines sorted chronologically for collectors looking for missing issues.  All the money generated by the book sales is gifted to the library district to use for purchases or activities not normally covered under the library’s operating budget. If you would like to donate material for the book sales, you can bring items anytime to the circulation desk of the three Hayner Library locations.  You can also arrange for pick up of your books and materials.

There are three types of volunteer opportunities within the Friends organization. Some people enjoy working one morning each week helping to sort material donations.  Others enjoy staffing the bi annual book sale and a third group consists of strictly financial supporters.  A Friends financial member ship is tiered at $ 5 for a yearly membership, $50 for a patron membership and $ 100 for a lifetime membership.  Of course, any financial donation is always welcome.
