Dennis Stroughmatt: et l’Esprit Creole

Posted December 21st, 2011 in Events

Jan246:30 PM

Take a tour into French Creole and Cajun music, through all the regional variations of North America, with Dennis Stroughmatt, an extraordinary fiddler, folklorist, historian, and passionate educator and speaker. Fingers and bow flying, the band, l’Esprit Creole, led by Dennis, takes listeners on a musical odyssey not so different from Dennis’s own musical journeys into Upper Louisana Creole culture. A vibrant blend of Celtic, Canadian, and Old Time sounds, this music bridges the gap between contemporary Canadian and Louisiana Cajun styles. Don’t miss this high energy performance.

Please note: This program will be held in 222 Alton Square Mall, upper level.

Project Next Generation

Posted December 20th, 2011 in Teens, Uncategorized

In today’s world, nearly anything that’s done is touched, in some way, by technology; specifically, computers and computer-assisted technology. You want to have that cutting edge; the one that gives your profile the kind of attention it needs to land you wherever it is that you’re wanting to be: in a great job that you love, with lots of potential; at the top of the list of people that that college you’re wanting to attend is considering for admission; or, in a position to start your own business, where you’ll be in charge. The Hayner Public Library District has resources available to give you experience, skills in using current cutting-edge technology, and the poise and presence to be able to sell your talents to others.
Project Next Generation, a program sponsored by the Illinois Secretary of State, is now in its sixth year of implementation at Hayner. We are excited to be able to offer Saturday workshops once per month using the newest technologies. Our winter workshops are filling up fast, so don’t wait to sign up! Meeting dates are Saturdays, January 21, 2012, for Web Design; February 25, 2012, for My Family History and the Day I Was Born; and March 31, 2012, for How to Use Garage Band on your iPad. In addition, we are hoping to develop a cadre of Project Next Generation graduates to be mentors to the younger patrons who want to learn how to use our computers and technological equipment.

Come join us for one of our Saturday sessions! There is no cost involved, and the payoffs are huge. Call 433-2861 for more information or to sign up for our next session! Limited space is available!

Posted December 20th, 2011 in Library News

The next time you visit Hayner Library at Alton Square Mall, be sure to look to your right as you enter the facility to view the artwork of Dr. Pat Dailey. Dr. Dailey, an Alton resident, is a man of many talents.

Originally from Warren, Ohio, Pat attended Youngstown State University in Ohio and graduated with a BA in Education. He continued his education at Bowling Green State University, earning a Master’s degree in Biology and a PHd in Entomology, the branch of zoology dealing with insects. As a graduate assistant at Bowling Green University, he worked part time as a biological illustrator. In 1981 he accepted a job at the SIUE Dental School in Alton. There he was employed as an electron microscopist. Electron microscopy is a function of cellular biology requiring the study of cells through an electron microscope. While employed by SIUE, he also illustrated a chapter in the medical text Ten Cate’s Oral Histology. He illustrated the chapter on Bone Development written by Dr. Bill Witson of the SIUE School of Dental Medicine.

Large Print Collection Relocated in Downtown Library

Posted December 19th, 2011 in Library News

The large print collection at the Hayner Downtown Library has been moved from its previous location upstairs; it is now located on the main level in the former Illinois Room. Aside from allowing more space for large print materials, the new space is nice and bright and best of all, no stairs!

The space opened up by this reconfiguration will be used to shelve our teen and young adult collections, separating them out from the youth materials. This will also allow us more space for the youth materials currently occupying the old Reading Room space.

Fresh paint and other cosmetic touches provide a great lift to the display of materials, and all three collections are more accessible. Visit us soon and let us know what you think!

Give a Family History Gift This Year!

Give a Family History Gift This Year!

Have fun creating gifts and legacies for future generations at the same time!  Some families make calendars filled with pictures of their children and activities.  Last year, my brother and sister-in-law framed an aerial photograph of Grandpa’s old home and farm and gave it to us for Christmas. Looking at the picture stirred memories of going to their house when we were children.  Another idea is to make a Christmas ornament. Resize a photo of an ancestor to fit into a small Victorian-style picture frame. Top it with a red bow and an ornament hook.

If you already have information about ancestors, put together interesting stories about them with their pictures in a CD, a book, or a scrapbook. Give them to your parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren. If you need inspiration about how to write family stories, browse the different family histories in the Genealogy & Local History Library.

Get together with your siblings and pull out the old family photos.  Before long you will be reminiscing about growing up. Get everyone’s permission to record your discussion. Write down everyone’s memories and couple them with photos. Be sure to put in the funny photos! Give everyone a CD or printed copy.  You will be surprised at which child or grandchild becomes interested in the family history!

The Hayner Public Library District is offering a four week series of Beginning Tai Chi classes for adults starting October 28.  The classes will meet in the Multipurpose Room of Hayner Alton Square Library.  The classes will begin at 1 p.m.

The adult classes will help attendees take an active role in their “quality of life.”  The classes will promote the practice of Tai Chi as adapted to gentle movements for expanding the range of motion in stiff, painful joints. Participants will learn proper breathing techniques incorporating Qi Gong for energy, mental alertness, and memory enhancement and Tae Bo for upper body strength and balance. Tai Chi has also been found to improve circulation (for those with diabetes), lower blood pressure, and assist in overcoming depression and anxiety.

The classes are free of charge but have limited enrollment.  The classes require registration; to register, please call 1-800-613-3163.
