When asked to name the first thing they think of when they hear the word “library,” most people think of one thing: books. Yes, Hayner Library has books (approximately 185,000 of them, in fact), but we also offer so much more than that.

As you glance through the pages of this newsletter, you’ll read about the programs, services, and collections offered at Hayner Library. To paraphrase the old Oldsmobile tagline, “This isn’t your father’s library.”

On the technology front, Hayner Library offers internet access, Wi-Fi, printers, copiers, free fax service, and scanning, and our Hayner Library at Alton Square Mall study rooms are equipped with smartboard interactive displays. We also check out hotspots and laptops to Hayner Library cardholders.

Hayner Library offers a myriad of digital resources, many accessible 24/7 from home with a Hayner Library card. These resources are designed to assist patrons of all ages and interests with homework, research, and business. We also have databases for crafting, auto repair, genealogy, local history, legal forms, small businesses, readers’ advisory, and much more.

Download the Cloud Library and OverDrive Libby apps and enjoy access to thousands of free ebooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines! Biblio+ (available online or through the Biblio+ app) allows Hayner Library cardholders to stream television shows and movies for free, and it’s even compatible with Roku!

Yes, we still check out books, but that’s not all. In addition to books, Hayner Library’s collection includes audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, large print materials, music CDs, Blu-rays, read-along audiovisual materials for emerging readers, and much more. Each format is available for readers of all ages. We have recently added board games and video games to our collection, and we’re excited to announce that several of our board games are available in braille editions. We’ve also added memory kits to our collection to help those with memory loss and their caregivers foster positive memories. We add new items to our collection every day. You can even sign up for Wowbrary (www.wowbrary.org) and receive a weekly email listing every item added to the Hayner Library collection during the week.

Our Library of Things allows Hayner Library cardholders to check out unconventional library materials, such as baking kits, tools, projectors, musical instruments, outdoor lawn games, moving equipment, a metal detector, telescopes, fishing poles, and many other fun items.

Hayner Library’s membership in the Illinois Heartland Library System’s SHARE consortia allows patrons to request materials from hundreds of Illinois libraries. Most available items can be ready for pick-up in just a few days! There’s even an app to make ordering easier. Download the “SHARE Mobile Library” app to order materials, review your online account, renew items, and so much more.

Hayner Library offers programming for children, teens, and adults, including story times, crafts, musical performances, lectures, one-on-one technology assistance, computer classes, book clubs, a homeschooling club, and too many others to list. Check out the Events Calendar on our website to view the dates and times of our programs.

Our website, www.haynerlibrary.org, social media accounts, and weekly email newsletter (sign up for free on our website) are great ways to stay up-to-date on everything that’s happening at the library.

Our outstanding library staff is happy to help you learn more about these programs, services, and collections. If you haven’t been to the library in a while, I encourage you to visit us. I guarantee you’ll find something interesting, enlightening, and entertaining. And yes, you’ll find books, too. Lots and lots of books!
