1. Do you have a photo of a place you can’t identify? Google.com can help:
• Save the image of your photo in a folder on your computer.
• On the Google website, click on “Image Search.”
• Drag or upload your image from your folder to the “Image Search” bar and click on “Search.”
Matches in Google Lens will include other identified pictures taken in the same place from the same vantage point as your photo.
2. Are you trying to date an old family photo?
In Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840 – 1900 (IR 391.0097309034 SEV), author Joan Severa explains how analyzing clothing styles and other details in old family photos can help date them.
3. Do you need to organize and preserve old family photos?
Author Denise May Levenick shares digital strategies in her book How to Archive Family Photos: A Step-by-Step Guide to Organize and Share Your Photos Digitally (IR 929.1 MAY). Her photo storage worksheet helps determine what works best for your needs.
Our February and March Branching Out genealogy classes also give us guidelines for organizing and preserving family documents and photos (paper and digital).
