The Hayner Public Library District’s Library of Things is a collection of non-traditional items including gadgets, tools, games, kits, electronics, and more—all available to check out for free with a Hayner Library card. Need something for a one-time project or want to try before you buy? Explore the collection and discover your next new thing to borrow! 

Things to know:

  • Library of Things collections are available at the Downtown Library and Hayner Library at Alton Square Mall. Each library has a binder listing the contents of the Library of Things items available at both locations.
  • Each location has unique items, with only a few duplicates of high-demand items such as projectors and screens.
  • Only Hayner Library cardholders, age 18 and older, with fines under $5.00 can check out items from the Library of Things.
  • Patrons must have a Hayner Library card for at least two weeks before they are eligible to check out items from the Library of Things.
  • Overdue fines for Library of Things items are $1.00 per item, per day.
  • Patrons must return Library of Things items at the Hayner Library location from which they were checked out.
  • Holds may be placed on Library of Things items; items must be checked out at the owning Hayner Library location (items will not be sent between locations).
  • Patrons may check out up to three items from the Library of Things at one time.
  • Items in the Library of Things may be checked out for two weeks.
  • Items in the Library of Things may not be renewed. Items must sit on the shelf for twenty-four hours before being checked back out to the same cardholder.
  • Patrons are required to sign a waiver before checking out items from the Library of Things. Waivers will be kept on file at the library and a waiver will also be included with each item at check out.
  • Each item in the Library of Things is marked with a replacement cost. Please note that the replacement cost for lost or damaged items in the Library of Things may exceed $300. Patrons may also be charged for items returned with missing components.
  • Library of Things items may not be returned in the book drop. Patrons should return all items at the Circulation Desk.
  • Items must be returned clean and in good working condition, with all parts accounted for. Patrons who habitually return items in the book drop, late, or with missing/soiled parts may have their access to the Library of Things collection suspended or revoked.
  • Kitchen-related items, such as pans, measuring cups, stand mixers, etc. must be washed before they are returned to the library. The library will also wash the items upon return to ensure they are cleaned and sanitized before being checked out by the next patron.
  • Library staff is always happy to answer any questions patrons might have regarding the Library of Things.
