Get Outside! A Survey of Alton Area Parks Past and Present

Get Outside! A Survey of Alton Area Parks Past and Present is an 88-page hardcover book offering one, two, and four-page photographic spreads with basic information and a brief history of the parks in active use in 2026 located in Alton, Godfrey, and Foster Township, Illinois. We celebrated the book’s publication with a signing on May 23, 2026, in the Jennie D. Hayner Park. Get Outside! is available at the Genealogy & Local History Library, with a suggested donation of $15.

Get Outside! is a collaborative project of the Alton High School Graphic Design Club, Reneé B. Johnson, and The Hayner Public Library District Genealogy & Local History Library. The Alton High School Graphic Design Club students made up the creative team, graphic communications teacher Lexa Brown-Needham served as project supervisor, and Reneé B. Johnson researched and wrote the book.  This is the third such project, following Alton ABC, a rhyming picture book published in 2019, and Color Me Alton: Seasons, a multigenerational coloring book published in 2022. All three publications are available at the Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library, 401 State Street, Alton, IL 62002.
