SUMMARY:All the News That’s Fit to Print: Write Your Own Obituary with Reneé B. Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Genealogy & Local History Library \nSaturdays\, October 3 and October 17\, 2026\, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Two session workshop) \nA good obituary tells us a bit about the deceased—more than just when they were born and died\, but how they lived.  An exceptional obituary reveals their personality and priorities; it draws us into their world for just a moment. It leaves us feeling like we know them that much more. Alleviate the stress for your loved ones.  You are the expert on you and your life.  This two-part workshop will help you consider what you want to include in your obituary\, how best to convey your thoughts\, and provide feedback on your draft. \nBoth sessions\, led by Reneé B. Johnson\, will be held Wednesdays\, August 3 and 17\, 2026\, from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library.  A pre-session questionnaire and other materials will be sent to registered participants prior to the first session.  Participants will be expected to do most of their writing between sessions. \nSession 1 – October 3\, 2026 \n\nReview of Pre-session questionnaire\nWhat is an obituary and what is a legacy letter?\nHow to craft the document you want\n\nSession 2 – October 17\, 2026 \n\nConsiderations of placement and distribution\nSharing and feedback\n\nThis workshop is limited to ten participants. Johnson is an award-winning Illinois historian who has spent more than fifty years collecting\, researching\, and documenting local history. SUMMARY:Poe and Irving – An Evening of Recitations with Anne Williams
DESCRIPTION:Genealogy & Local History Library\, 401 State Street\, Alton\nTuesday\, October 27\, 2026\, 6:30 p.m. \nPlease note – Because this program is presented entirely from memory\, concentration by the performer is critical. In order to assist with this\, this program is limited to patrons aged thirteen and older. \nWith the lights turned down and the Gothic-style architecture of the Genealogy & Local History Library adding to the ambiance\, patrons are in for an atmospheric treat as Anne Williams\, historic interpreter and performer\, will recite dramatically\, from memory\, several works by the author Edgar Allan Poe as well as scenes from another October favorite\, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\, by Washington Irving. Poe’s stories will include The Tell-Tale Heart\, The Black Cat\, The Raven\, and others. This is Anne’s second time performing at Hayner Library. Her performance last year was so well-received that we have invited her back for an encore presentation—one you won’t want to miss! \nAnne has shared the authors’ stories and poems with audiences at historic sites in New York\, Philadelphia\, Richmond\, and regionally in Missouri and Illinois. She has worked with the National Park Service\, St. Louis Public Radio\, and many historic sites on various projects\, including dramatic recitation of literature and historic speeches\, creating and performing in short plays\, reconstructing historic events\, film narration\, and a complete audio production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Anne has collaborated with Ballet 314 and Opera Theater Saint Louis. \nSeating is limited. Please call 1-800-613-3163 to register for this program.
