Eugene Jones Baldwin: There is No Color in Justice

December 10, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Please join us for Eugene Jones Baldwin’s lecture on his newly published book, There is No Color in Justice. Eugene Jones Baldwin is a journalist, poet, playwright, and musician. Recent publications include A Black Soldier’s Letters Home: WWII (with James Killion III), and The Genehouse Chronicles, stories of nature and people of his native Alton. His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, and regional theaters around the country. Water Brought Us and Water’s Gonna Take Us Away, commissioned by the National Park Service about the Underground Railroad in Illinois, was produced in 2002. A writer/producer for the 1990 National Tuskegee Airmen Oral History Project, Gene recently published a story in The Telegraph of Jerseyville’s Tuskegee Airmen, George and Arnold Cisco.

From the author: My book was born at the funeral of civil rights pioneer Josephine Beckwith, whom I had interviewed for The Telegraph. Judge Duane  Bailey approached me and told me I was going to write about the history of Alton in the fifties, a subject about which I knew nothing. I told Judge Bailey I was the wrong color. He replied, “There is no color in justice.” In that same year, my great-great grandfather, William Holman Jones, a conductor on the Michigan Underground Railroad and friend of John Brown, spoke to me in a dream: “I have a story to tell.” James Baldwin, whose collected works are on my nightstand, speaks to me every night. Five years and countless interviews with families of civil rights leaders later, There is No Color in Justice, a personal journey, really is finished. This is that story.
