George Provenzano, PhD – The Deaths and Funerals of Abraham and Mary Lincolns’ Two Sons: Eddy and Willie
February is the month we remember Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12, 1809). But February is also the month in which two of Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s four sons died: Edward (Eddy) Baker Lincoln died on February 1, 1850, and William (Willie) Wallace Lincoln died on February 20, 1862. Both boys lived short lives and died after suffering extended episodes of infectious diseases that few children experience today. This presentation will discuss how Abraham and Mary Lincoln mourned the loss of Eddy and Willie during their funerals and for several years thereafter.
George Provenzano is an historian and retired economist. He has published several articles on General James Semple, Abraham Lincoln, and Illinois before the Civil War.
